Patchwork cassette (1992)

Well…this one has proven to be quite the “little stinker”!  I’ve been working on this one for over a month now!  It isn’t perfect, but I think it sounds about as good as it’s gonna get.  THANK YOU (once again) Robbie Kording for hookin’ me up with this one!

What we have here is the infamous “Patchwork” compilation cassette tape from 1992!  Yeah…this cassette is 20 damn years old!!  This was put out by David Keefer Fulgham & C.C. Lauterbach.  I have no idea who those folks are, but I gotta say…they did a DAMN FINE job of capturing what the Springfield, IL music scene sounded like back in 1992.  Now, I’ll admit…I didn’t start going to shows until about 3 years after this cassette was released, so many of the bands on here I never got a chance to see until much later.  N.I.L.8 and Soul Pudding shows came pretty early in my show-goin’ days, and so did Suns of Circumstance — I saw them for the first time at the Illinois State Fair.  I just stood outside of a beer tent and watched them since I wasn’t even close to being of drinking age at the time.  But…Tom Irwin wouldn’t come until MUCH later, and I never got around to seeing Cats on Holiday or They Came In Droves as they normally did 21+ shows exclusively.  I know I sound like a broken record here, but man…what talent we have in this town!  A fair amount of folks who play on this cassette are still performing to this day.  You’ll even hear Debbie Ross chime in on Suns of Circumstance’s cover of the Dave Mason tune, “Feelin’ Alright”!

This is one of my most favorite posts on this music blog to date.  Quite an important piece of Springfield, IL music history.  Six important local performers at what could easily be said as their prime!  …and for all of you punk rockers out there…the version of N.I.L.8’s “Medicine Man” on this one is different than the one that appears on “Hallelujah, I’m Gonna KILL Myself“!!  It’s a much earlier version.  VERY raw and the vocal lines are just a little different.   Intense stuff!  Try your best to sit still while listenin’ to that one!

Considering this cassette is 20 years old this year, it didn’t sound too bad.  Side 1 was nearly perfect.  Side 2 took A LOT of work to get up to par.  I don’t know what happened, but everything was panned left.  I did my best to get it as uniform as possible.  The tape hiss was a real sonofabitch on side 2 as well for some reason.  If y’all feel it’s just too shitty to even enjoy, PLEASE let me know and I’ll take another crack at it.  OR…if any of you have a cleaner version I can put up here, please let me know!

In the meantime, download the file below, pour yourself your favorite drink (booze or non-booze), spark up a “smoke” (if you do that sorta thing), kick back and enjoy.  I know listening to these tunes again will bring back some very fond memories for a good handful of ya!  Especially Soul Pudding’s “Dandelion”.  It’s a LIVE version that was recorded at some venue that is no longer.  A place that a lot of you who visit here probably still hold near and dear to your heart.  You’ll know what I’m talkin’ about when you listen to it!
